Church Groups

St John Bosco is home to a number of groups, catering to parishioners' needs, ranging from the spiritual and pastoral to the social.
Apart from sharing a common sense of journeying in faith, they all share the desire to welcome new members.

If you are interested in participating in any of the following activities please see the parish secretary who will put you in contact with the relevant contact of the group.

Association for the Propagation of Faith

Picture
The Association for the Propagation of the Faith (APF) was founded in Lyons in 1822 by Pauline Jaricot. One century later, Pope Pius XI made the organisation the official mission-funding society for the whole Church.  APF assists each and every one of the Catholic church’s 1,062 mission dioceses and territories to provide pastoral care and preach the Gospel effectively. In this country, the APF works with the Mill Hill Missionary Society.  Founded in 1866 by Cardinal Vaughan it is the only major missionary society to have been formed in Britain and its priests, lay brothers and associates work in 27 countries and every continent. Supporters of APF keep a Red Mission Box in their homes and helping the missions with their contributions and prayers.  The Red Box is a symbol of faith.  APF-Mill Hill's Red Boxes can be found in thousands of Catholic homes in England and Wales and the money collected go to fund the vital work of the Catholic Church abroad.  Many of the churches supported by Red Box funds are in their infancy and face extreme difficulties. They urgently need our prayers and continued financial support.
If you wish to support the APF and would like a Red Box, please contact the parish centre

Bereavement Support Group

When someone dies it is often a time of great sadness, mourning and reflection but as Christians we must also remember to rejoice that the Lord Jesus Christ has won a great victory over death and made it possible for us to pass through to new and eternal life.
The parish bereavement support group exists to provide love, support and prayers to individuals and families who have suffered the loss of a loved one.
This period can also be a busy time when arrangements have to be made and friends and relatives notified. So it is the intention of the Bereavement Support Group to assist with some information and advice for funeral arrangements which may be helpful.
If you do need any further information or are looking to help the parish by joining the bereavement support group please contact the Parish administrator.

The Divine Mercy Circle

Shortly before the outbreak of World War II, a simple uneducated young Polish nun receives a special call. Jesus appears to her and tells her “I am sending you with My mercy to the people of the whole world.  I do not want to punish mankind, but I desire to heal it, pressing it to My merciful Heart”. Jesus also tells her to record His message of mercy in a diary “You are the secretary of My Mercy”.

She died in obscurity in 1938, but is now hailed by Pope John Paul II as “the great apostle of Divine Mercy in our time”. She was canonised on April 30th 2000.  The Pope said “the message of Divine Mercy that she shared is urgently needed at the dawn of the new millennium."

Devotion to the Divine Mercy involves a total commitment to God as Mercy. It is a decision to trust completely in him, to accept his mercy with thanksgiving, and to be merciful as he is merciful. The
devotional practices proposed in the diary of Saint Faustina and set forth in here are completely in accordance with the teachings of the Church and are firmly rooted in the Gospel message of our Merciful Saviour. Properly understood and implemented, they will help us grow as genuine followers of Christ.

LiveSimply Group

The LiveSimply Group was formed in order to foster the idea of caring for the Earth within the community of St John Bosco church. This is done by promoting the aims of the Cafod “Live Simply” campaign, and spreading the environmental message. It shows how each individual can make a difference through energy saving and conservation measures - and gives them tips and help along the way

In 2012 after four years’ work our church became the first parish to be awarded the Livesimply Award, a national prize awarded by CAFOD, which recognises the ways a parish can make a difference in its community and the world with a commitment to live more simply and sustainably and to stand in solidarity with the world’s poor.
